The victims have been identified as two brothers from Malaud village in Ludhiana district, Harman Somal, 23, and Navjot Somal, 19. The third victim was Rashmdeep Kaur, 23, from Samana in Sangrur district, whose parents are government teachers.

They were returning from submitting their permanent residency documents when the accident happened. The taxi driver survived the crash. The accident took place on July 27 around 9:35 pm on Highway 2.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the loss of the tire caused the driver to lose control, leading to the vehicle veering off the highway.

The three students were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene from their injuries. The driver, who had non-life-threatening injuries, was taken to a hospital.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. A fundraising page has been created to assist in repatriating the bodies to India.

Over the past five years, 633 Indian students have died abroad due to various reasons, with Canada reporting the highest number of deaths at 172, followed by the US with 108, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
