Sahil Jilani Found Dead at Abrams Falls.
Sahil Jilani, a 24 year old NRI from Houston, Texas, has been found dead by authorities. He was reported missing 5 days earlier after going for a solo hike in the Great Smoky Mountains.
Jilani was last seen on October 5 at the Riverstone Campground in Townsend. His car was later recovered on October 7th at the Abrams Falls trailhead.
After an official search, divers sadly recovered Jilani’s body from the water at Abrams Falls on October 8th. His keys, wallet, clothes, and phone were also found nearby.
While the cause of death is still pending, it is believed that Jilani passed away after getting caught in a current. The Abrams Falls has powerful underwater currents that can sweep away and drown an unprepared hiker.
Jilani’s sister reported that their mother had been apprehensive after he failed to check in. Jilani had hiked beyond the coverage of cellular network during his hike.
His family had grown concerned after he did not check in for several hours. His location broadcast had also stopped due to lack of coverage.
Park authorities have issued strong warnings to other hikers planning to visit Abrams Falls. Swimming is strongly discouraged due to slippery rocks and dangerous currents.
Sahil’s death serves as a warning to other NRIs as well. As beautiful as the wilderness is in America, not being careful can lead to serious injury and even death.
