An innocent summer trip to visit an ill family member might just cost a student their F-1 visa as per the strict policies of a US university.
A Canadian student studying at an arts college in the US took to Reddit in panic after being told the school would remove them from SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) for summer break.
They were planning to go home for two weeks to work on a project and care for a sick family member. But according to the school, that could mean termination of their F-1 status.
SEVIS is the central database that holds records for all legal international students on F, M, and J visas. For most international students, a terminated record means loss of legal status in the US, no work rights, and possible visa issues when re-entering.
To add to their frustration, the student says their college demands a fresh I-20 signature, an official document issued by the school that proves their eligibility, every time they leave the country. Border officers tell them it’s unnecessary, but the school insists.
Netizens’ advice was to not let your SEVIS record be terminated. Take at least one summer class or request an official vacation term through your DSO (Designated School Officer). Otherwise, you risk being locked out when trying to return.
