Shocking US Rehire: Indian Hate Normalized?

Racism against Indians in the US is reaching unprecedented heights. Now an engineer who openly boasted about his hate against the Indian community has been rehired in a key role without offering any apology.

Marko Elez had earlier resigned from his post in the Elon Musk-led DOGE after a report linked him to a racist X account with posts like, “I was racist before it was cool” and “Normalize Indian hate.” Yet, On February 7 Musk brought him back igniting outrage among the Indian diaspora.

JD Vance, the US Vice President married to an Indian-origin wife, defended the 25-year-old engineer, adding more fuel to the fire. This led to various members of the community condemning the VP and demanding an apology from Elez.

Many Indian-Americans also feel betrayed by the Republican party which they helped bring back in power. Venture capitalist Vasant Bhatt slammed far-right radicals saying, “We don’t owe loyalty to a party that tolerates racists who despise us.”

This hate is not limited to online platforms, as a San Francisco-based investor shared how an Indian man was harassed at Starbucks. “This is what happens when hate is normalized,” he warned.

Indians are realizing they need to speak up against racist attacks before it is too late. The community deserves way better treatment or recognition for their contribution to the American economy, society, and politics.
