NATO Divided Over Iran War: Spain Blocks US Planes

The US and some NATO allies are facing differences over Washington’s actions in Iran, which have added to tensions in the Middle East. Spain has now taken a firm step by restricting the use of its airspace for US military operations.

Defence Minister Margarita Robles confirmed that Spain will not allow its bases or airspace to be used for activities linked to the conflict in Iran. This decision extends beyond earlier limits placed on access to Rota and Morón de la Frontera bases.

As a result, US military aircraft may now need to reroute around Spanish-controlled airspace. Reports also suggest that aircraft from allied countries like the UK or France could face similar restrictions unless there is an emergency situation.

Spain’s stance reflects its broader position against involvement in the conflict. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has openly criticised the US approach, calling it against international norms and raising concerns about its consequences.

This development has sparked discussions about unity within NATO. Spain’s move highlights growing differences among allies regarding the handling of the situation in the Middle East.

For the US, the challenge increases as even close partners show reluctance to support military actions. Spain’s decision may not stop operations, but it adds logistical pressure and sends a clear diplomatic signal.
