OPT Clock Ticking, F-1 Gets E-Verify Locked Out

A student on an F-1 visa is facing a STEM OPT crisis as the application deadline is less than three weeks away. You are ready to file, but your employer cannot access the E-Verify ID required for the process.

The employer is active in E-Verify, but the CEO says the account is locked. You confirmed the company’s active status directly with E-Verify support. Despite this, the missing ID has created uncertainty for your application.

STEM OPT E-Verify deadline issue

The Form I-765 for STEM OPT asks for the employer’s E-Verify ID. Without it, you may feel blocked from filing. This requirement often creates confusion for students close to the deadline.

Some experts say the E-Verify ID is not strictly mandatory at filing. USCIS can verify employer enrolment using the Employer Identification Number. This approach has worked in previous cases.

Filing Form I-765 without E-Verify ID

One student confirmed approval last year using only the Employer Identification Number. However, you must understand that scrutiny can be higher under the current administration. This increases the risk if details are missing.

You should include proof that your employer is active in E-Verify. Add a clear written note explaining why the ID is unavailable. This helps USCIS understand the situation during review.

DSO guidance and OPT work authorisation risk

You must also ensure Form I-983 is fully completed and submitted to your DSO. This step protects you from future compliance issues related to STEM OPT.

If you miss the deadline, work authorisation ends automatically. This can severely impact your legal status and employment. Filing on time is critical, even with documentation challenges.
