The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak has reassured its government’s dedication at trying to provide justice to the numerous victims of the Post Office scandal which also impacted a large number of British Indians who worked in the department. These people were wrongly accused of fraud because of a technical error caused by a faulty IT system.
The Post Office Ltd. which is owned by the government of UK used an IT system named Horizon during the 90s, for accounting which produced irregularities and implicated frauds when there were none. This resulted in the conviction of thousands of sub post masters who were made to serve sentences and pay fines.
A large number of these post office workers were of Indian origin. Many of them appealed against their conviction and were cleared off all charges. The government was made to pay compensation for the damage to their career and reputation. The UK government is still in the process of handing out these compensations.
It is estimated that the government has paid a total of 150 million GBP so far. Rishi Sunak tried to assure that the government is working on the process and everyone would be fairly compensated in due time.
