Trump’s Blunder: Racist Attack On Kamala Harris?

Kamala Harris might be on the verge of creating history. On November 4, she will not only stand a chance to become the first woman President of the United States but also the first of Indian origin to assume the office.

On the other hand, Donald Trump’s camp is not behind either as both sides have criticized and called each other out on public platforms. However, there have been some remarks from Trump and his party members that might have led a key US official to condemn them.

Harris inherits a unique double heritage from her Indian mother and Jamaican Father. This has been a point of contention for Republicans who claim this is just a ploy to get votes from both Indian and African-American communities.

Richard Verma, a senior US Diplomat, recently denounced these “vile and racist attacks” against the Indian American community. Although he didn’t directly mention Harris or Trump, it was quite clear to whom it was directed.

He has called out the increasing “demonization” of the Indian Americans in the society. This was likely an allusion to the comments made by Laura Loomer, Trump’s associate, saying Harris would make the White House “smell like curry” if she wins.

Verma was critical of the hostile environment in the US for immigrants, empathizing with the Indian diaspora as he is himself part of the community.
