US Colleges’ New Trend: Indians Leave Engineering

The most favorable course for Indians is losing its shine among the students in the US. With tech courses and Artificial Intelligence shaping the future, traditional engineering courses are becoming outdated.

According to new data, Engineering enrollment among Indian students has dropped to 24.5%. In comparison, other courses like computer science and math have become the most popular, surging to 42.9%.

This is mainly because the job market is getting redefined with AI, blockchain, and machine learning. Traditional engineering courses don’t equip one with all these tools and it is important for Indian students to stay ahead of the curve.

Even colleges understand this as they are shifting their curriculum to offer more mixed courses. Top American universities like MIT, Stanford, and Carnegie Mellon are offering programs that mix tech with business skills.

While this is great news for students in the US, it does put a question on the Indian education system, which is still stuck with a decades-old curriculum. There are no reforms in the traditional courses to accommodate the various technological advancements in our country.

This is the main reason the youth has to travel to America and struggle in a competitive job market. Nonetheless, it has become clear that the old engineering path is no longer the only way forward for Indian students.
