US Elections: What If Trump & Kamala Harris Tie?

The 2024 US elections are inching closer and the competition is running tight between the two candidates. It is so close that people have started wondering what would happen if it is a tie.

In the US there are a total of 538 electors, including representatives and senators. Therefore, a candidate needs a majority of 270 votes to win.

The race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is so close that people are considering a tie at 269 votes each or an event where both fail to gain a majority.

If this unusual incident does happen the US Constitution has the 12th amendment that will come into effect. It is a controversial process where the House of Representatives gets involved and each state gets one vote regardless of their population differences.

This system means that smaller states have a bit more influence relative to their population size.

There have been only a handful of incidents where both presidential candidates have failed to get the majority, and it has always thrown the political landscape in disarray.

Experts have pointed out how broken and outdated the system is but there haven’t been any changes to it. Now only time will tell if this year’s election could get more messy than it already has.
