Imagine moving across a country for a new job, only to be told on Day 1 that you’re fired. That’s exactly what happened to one hopeful worker who relocated from Los Angeles to New Hampshire and got laid off because of his H-1B visa issues.
Taking to social media, the immigrant worker shared how he was all set with his employee ID and work laptop. Then, just hours in, HR pulled him aside and told him because of his visa status, they wouldn’t be able to continue his employment.
What makes it more terrible is that this person had flagged the issue weeks earlier, asking for the crucial I-983 form. HR promised to handle it, but the one responsible quit, and no one else cared to follow up.
This is the latest incident of the system failing people who are already in peril. Since January, this person has been grinding through job searches, and interviews, moving twice across the country, losing savings, and facing heartbreak five times at the last hurdle.
The mental and emotional turmoil is crushing even to imagine. Many H-1B hopefuls are facing the same nightmare as the US is in political turmoil, with nothing certain about their future in an alien country.
The situation keeps getting worse every day and more such talented people keep getting shafted for no fault of their own.
