The death of a former Indian-origin employee of OpenAI, who called out the company for unethical practices, has come as a shocker to his family. While the authorities have declared the cause of death as suicide, the grieving parents refuse to believe it, hiring a private investigator to dig deeper.
According to local media, Suchir Balaji, 26, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment on November 26 during a routine well-being check from police. While officials ruled it a suicide and found no evidence of foul play, his parents, Poornima Ramarao and Balaji Ramamurthy, aren’t convinced.
This could be because just months before his death, Balaji had accused OpenAI of breaking US copyright laws while developing ChatGPT. His accusations were going to be crucial in the legal battles against the company.
While OpenAI denied these claims and insisted their practices comply with fair use, they’ve also expressed sorrow following this tragic news. However, the parents are not buying any of it, calling for an independent autopsy on their son.
Balaji didn’t fear standing up for the right in public, as he openly went against the tech giant after working for them for four years. Therefore, his sudden demise has left many unanswered questions and a family seeking the truth.
