Earlier this month, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur sparked controversy by claiming that his 1994 film, Bandit Queen, had been altered beyond recognition on Prime Video.
Days after his statement, a spokesperson from the OTT platform addressed the issue, clarifying that the version of the film currently available on the platform was provided by its distributor, NH Studioz.
According to reports, the spokesperson claimed that no edits had been made by Prime Video to the film.
It was emphasized that the platform had merely streamed the version supplied to them by the distributor and that any modifications had been done before the film was acquired.
The controversy began when Shekhar Kapur, while praising Netflix’s British series Adolescence, raised concerns about creative freedom in India.
He described the show as a revolutionary piece of storytelling, and has deep character exploration and non-traditional narrative structure.
His remarks prompted filmmaker Sudhir Mishra to express scepticism over whether such bold storytelling would ever be allowed in India.
Mishra suggested that Indian filmmakers might have to pursue such projects independently to maintain artistic integrity.
Following this exchange, Kapur publicly questioned whether Indian directors were given the same creative respect as their Western counterparts.
He expressed disappointment over the altered version of Bandit Queen, stating that his name remained attached to a film that had been modified without his consent. He even said that a situation like this wouldn’t occur with filmmakers like Christopher Nolan.
