Although the film “The Boy and the Heron” had an early release in Japan, the USA just witnessed it in theaters. Shockingly, they didn’t disappoint, treating it similarly to the Martin Scorsese film.
“The Boy and the Heron” managed to gross $12.8M, becoming the first original animation film to peak at the #1 spot in the US box office.
Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” dominates GKids’ release, topping charts with record revenues in IMAX and premium formats. The film benefits from a scarcity of major releases, as anticipated blockbusters like “Wonka” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” are yet to debut. This marks Miyazaki’s unexpected return after over a decade, earning $84 million globally, with $56 million from Japan, following his announced retirement in 2013.
Though the box office is still somewhat governed by Hunger Games and Miyazaki, next week, Wonka will be arriving to shake off every competition. Then the weekends will see a plethora of big titles clashing during Christmas.
