We all saw AR Rahman shining brightly in the album of Chamkila, but he couldn’t really score a goal in that of Maidaan.
We were still vibing with the recently released Chamkila songs, and another album by A.R. Rahman just dropped. “Maidaan,” an upcoming movie by Ajay Devgn based on India’s first football triumph, is a sports drama by Boney Kapoor with music given by A.R. Rahman. The hype was already high, and considering his latest release, Chamkila songs, everyone hoped for a great experience with this one too. Was it worth the wait?
“Maidaan” has five songs in total penned by the famous lyricist and dialogue writer Manoj Muntashir, known for his range from songs like “Galliyan” to dialogues in “Adipurush.”
The first song of the album, “Mirza,” seems fresh in composition and easy on the ears. It has a catchy melody and has a repeat value. Richa Singh and Javed Ali have given a beautiful feel to the song, but unfortunately, the same does not happen with the rest of the songs.
The next song is an upbeat drum music with a rap portion by MC Heam, who has also contributed a rap song in “Pippa,” another A.R. Rahman album. Nevertheless, the song serves its purpose.
The remaining three songs, “Dil Nahi Todenge,” “Team India Hain Hum,” and “Jaane Do,” are forgettable at best. “Dil Nahi Todenge” feels like it had too much potential and could have been elevated by better lyrics. “Team India Hain Hum” is just another tournament anthem, but we expect much more from an A.R. Rahman album. “Jaane Do” is yet another song that needs to be played multiple times to get inside our heads.
Overall, we expected better from an A.R. Rahman album. But considering it’s not a musical like “Chamkila” and is instead a sports drama, the songs might work. Do let us know your thoughts on the album.
