Rajinikanth’s much-awaited film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, hit theatres on 14th August. While the film opened strong with impressive pre-bookings, audience response has been mixed.
Due to the lukewarm reviews, Coolie witnessed a sharp drop in collections after the first weekend. It is currently performing moderately at the box office.
Now, reports suggest that Coolie is expected to premiere on Amazon Prime Video from 11th September. The OTT release is said to follow a four-week window for Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada versions. The Hindi version may arrive later, following an eight-week OTT window due to its release across North Indian multiplexes.
Despite its big-screen release, Coolie became a target of online trolls. Many netizens even went so far as to call it Lokesh Kanagaraj’s weakest film.
The film has now become the centre of fresh trolling again—this time due to Lokesh’s post-release interviews. In one statement, he mentioned that he didn’t allow audience expectations to affect him and stuck to the script he had originally written.
This remark didn’t sit well with many fans. Several viewers criticised Lokesh Kanagaraj for allegedly not accepting the film’s failure and shifting blame to the audience instead.
Given the earlier backlash and the renewed criticism, Coolie may face another wave of trolling after its OTT release. However, an official announcement regarding the digital release date is still awaited.
Whether Coolie will redeem itself on OTT or invite further criticism remains to be seen.
