
Disney+ Hotstar recently released the first two episodes of “Shōgun”. This 10 episode series is based on the 1975 novel “Shōgun” Written by James Clavell. Later, in 1980 this book was adapted into a miniseries. The 2024 Hulu series stars Anna Sawai as Lady Mariko, Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Toranaga, Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorne.
With all these versatile actors we can definitely sense the success of the series.
Shōgun is a historical drama series set in 1600 Japan. The main plot revolves around two ambitious men who wants the title “Shōgun”, and there is also a very mysterious samurai. The 2024 series starts with a depiction of a trading ship named “Erasmus”, with it’s starving crew along with the English sailor John Blackthorne played by Cosmo Jarvis.
After his ship reaches Japan, Blackthorne is held as a prisoner at the Osaka castle. In between these we could see the bitterness between Lord Ishido and Lord Toranaga. Later in the story Blackthorne will gather an unlikely alliance with Lord Toranaga, and he will assign Mariko played by Anna Sawai, who is an outcast and belongs from a notorious family as Blackthorne’s translaor.
The presentation of the first two episodes are out of the box. Starting from it’s visually pleasing frames to the pure Japanese cultural references, everything is beautifully depicted. This series holds the power to transport the audience into 1600 japan. Although, many critiques are are comparing “Shōgun” with “Game Of Thrones” , based on it’s portrayal Of gore.
“Shōgun” is a very rich text, that has been amazing recreated by Jonathan Van Tulleken. With each passing episode all the mysteries of Shōgun are about to come in light.
