FIFA World Cup Battle: Who is Giving Tough Fight to Jiostar?

Zee Entertainment Enterprises is planning a strong return to India’s sports broadcasting space. Reports suggest the company is targeting the FIFA World Cup as its comeback platform. This move has created fresh competition in the market.

FIFA is close to finalising its India broadcast partner for the 2026 and 2030 Men’s World Cups. ZEE has emerged as a serious contender. It is competing with Jio Hotstar, which is already a dominant player.

After months of delays, FIFA recently held meetings with both Jio Hotstar and ZEE executives. These discussions aimed to push negotiations forward. The development indicates that the final decision may be announced soon.

The valuation of broadcast rights has dropped significantly. FIFA had earlier expected nearly $100 million for combined India rights. However, current estimates suggest the value has reduced to around $35 million.

Broadcasters have become cautious about investing heavily in sports rights. Many recent tournaments failed to deliver strong advertising returns. This has forced companies to rethink their spending strategies.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar reportedly cost broadcasters about $60 million. However, industry reports indicate that they recovered less than half through advertisements. This has raised concerns about future investments.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup presents additional challenges. It will be hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Most matches are expected to air between midnight and early morning in India.

These timings are not favourable for advertisers. In addition, India is not part of the tournament. This limits the commercial appeal despite football’s growing fan base in the country.

JioStar is reportedly unwilling to increase its bid beyond $20 million. The company appears cautious about overpaying for the rights. It already holds a strong position in India’s sports market.

ZEE, however, sees this as an opportunity to rebuild its sports identity. The network aims to attract younger viewers, especially digital audiences. Football continues to have strong appeal among urban and Gen Z fans.

Even if JioStar loses the rights, its business may not be affected much. The company controls major cricket properties and top sporting events. Its dominance in sports broadcasting remains strong.

For ZEE, securing FIFA rights could mark a major comeback. It would signal its intent to compete in premium live sports again. The final announcement from FIFA is expected in the coming days.
