Biggest Director Warns: “Netflix Is Bad for Cinema”

Renowned filmmaker James Cameron has shared strong views on the theatrical exhibition model and the growing influence of Netflix. He believes the streaming giant is weakening traditional theatrical distribution through its current release strategies.

Netflix has been expanding its presence in theatres by releasing some films on the big screen before their digital premieres. This approach aims to blend theatrical runs with streaming releases. The strategy has drawn mixed reactions within the film industry.

Several titles, including Frankenstein and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, received theatrical releases before streaming. These limited runs were part of Netflix’s attempt to qualify films for awards consideration.

In a recent interview, James Cameron warned that Netflix could damage the theatrical business. He described the reported Netflix and Warner Bros. deal as a potential disaster. He questioned Netflix’s long term commitment to theatres.

Cameron said Netflix would never fully support meaningful theatrical distribution, even if it expands further. He added that the Academy Awards hold no value for him if they do not prioritise theatrical releases. His remarks were direct and uncompromising.

He stated that films should be made primarily for theatrical viewing. Cameron argued that Netflix should qualify for Academy recognition only if its films run in at least 2,000 theatres for a full month, not brief 10 day releases.

Many users online agreed with Cameron’s concerns. They feel the theatrical distribution model is under threat if streaming platforms continue to dominate release strategies. Some believe cinema experiences could lose their cultural importance.
