JioHotstar has often faced criticism from users over issues related to its platform experience. Over the months, several subscribers have openly trolled the service for various shortcomings.
Now, users have found another reason to express their frustration. JioHotstar has officially announced a subscription price hike effective from January 28, triggering strong backlash across social media.
The revised prices apply only to the Super and Premium subscription tiers. The Mobile tier remains unchanged, offering some relief to entry-level users.
Under the new pricing, the Super quarterly plan has increased from Rs 299 to Rs 349. The Super annual plan has also gone up from Rs 899 to Rs 1099.
The Premium plans have seen a sharper hike. The Premium quarterly plan has risen from Rs 499 to Rs 699. The biggest jump is in the Premium annual plan, which now costs Rs 2199 instead of Rs 1499.
The Rs 700 hike in the Premium annual plan has angered many users. Several expressed disappointment and claimed they would rather rely on third-party apps like Telegram instead of paying high subscription fees.
Many users also pointed out the timing of the hike. They believe JioHotstar strategically increased prices ahead of the IPL season, which could impact consumer spending patterns.
Other OTT platforms are also under scrutiny. Prime Video recently raised prices for its ad-free plans. Meanwhile, SonyLiv and Netflix have retained their existing pricing.
Some users feel Netflix continues to be the best OTT platform. They cite its ad-free experience and say they are willing to accept a minimal price hike if the same model is maintained.
As OTT subscriptions become more expensive, many viewers believe this could push audiences back to theatres. Users argue that the money spent annually on OTT platforms can instead be used to watch multiple films on the big screen with a better atmosphere.
However, it is important to note that the revised prices apply only to new subscribers who join after January 28. Existing subscribers will not see any change in their quarterly or annual plans for now.
