Kalki On OTT: 1 Good 1 Bad

Since the other day, there have been reports that Prabhas and Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD will have its prelude premiere on OTT. It is reported that the prelude video introduces the world of Kalki to the audience and it will be streaming on Netflix.

Thus far, not many know what Kalki is about and hence, this prelude video is a must to establish the world of Kalki. So, the idea to release a dedicated world establishment video is a necessary and well-thought one.

But at the same time, releasing the video, or set of videos solely on Netflix is a downer as far as the reach goes.

Kalki is a wide-reach film with good potential possibly in many other languages. For better penetration and wider access, the makers should have instead opted to release the prelude on all the available OTT platforms including YouTube.

If the prelude is solely released on Netflix, the reach will be only as big as Netflix’s viewer base. The reach will be restricted only to the Netflix audience.

For wider spectrum films like Kalki, a wider and bigger reach before the release is the key. So we have to wait and see if the makers will alter the decision and consequently release the prelude on all available and free mediums instead of paid networks like Netflix.
