Korean, Chinese Love Stories & Dramas to be OTT Banned: Why?

Korean and Chinese dramas have gained massive popularity in India in recent years. A large section of the audience, especially women, has been drawn to these shows. Their appeal lies in glossy visuals and dramatic romantic storytelling.

Most of these romance-driven dramas follow a familiar pattern. The story usually revolves around a wealthy and powerful businessman and a poor young woman. Their relationship faces hurdles before love ultimately conquers social boundaries.

This repeated storyline has become a proven formula for creators. Many shows rely on exaggerated emotions and unrealistic romantic situations. As a result, originality often takes a back seat while fantasy-driven narratives dominate the screen.

Such portrayals are increasingly seen as misleading. They can create distorted ideas about relationships and success. Young viewers, especially women, may be influenced by these idealised versions of love and companionship.

The Chinese government has already taken steps to regulate these so-called CEO romance dramas. Several creators have been restricted from promoting unrealistic expectations around love and wealth. The aim is to limit content that glorifies materialism.

Despite these measures, concerns continue to grow. Calls for stricter action against such romance dramas are becoming louder. Critics argue that repeated exposure can negatively impact young minds and shape unhealthy expectations.

Indian audiences, particularly women, are also deeply invested in Korean and Chinese dramas. Many viewers begin to associate love with wealth and status. This belief can subtly affect emotional outlook and personal expectations.

Regulating such micro-dramas is seen as a positive move by some observers. It could discourage narratives focused on wealth flaunting and fantasy romance. Whether these dramas will continue to dominate the Indian OTT market remains uncertain.
