What to Watch on OTT

Unnecessary Noise, No Cuts in Daaku Maharaaj

Netflix India was recently dealing with outrage against the streaming platform for apparently leaving out actress Urvashi Rautela from the marketing of Daaku Maharaaj.

The fans were quick to notice that her name and face did not appear in the poster and cast of the movie on the platform, triggering wild rumours that her scenes, including a much-awaited item song, had been deleted from the OTT release.

Social media blew up in outrage, with several calling out Netflix for dropping Rautela. The show, on its launch day, however, appears to have silenced such rumours. Rautela’s name was included in the credits and no scene with her was chopped.

It is a reminder of the powers of social media as a dent of public opinion and propagating falsehoods.

In this age of instant headlines against time, where news is told on the basis of speculation and less on verified truth, the Daaku Maharaaj debate rings a thought regarding the importance of verifying the facts before haste-filled judgment.

Although there was initial commotion, the film itself is intact, and its actual success will be known when Netflix posts its official viewership figures next Tuesday.

With the dust finally settling, this controversy serves to remind everyone that not everything on the internet is real. For Rautela and Daaku Maharaaj, it seems to have been much ado about nothing.
