Netflix India: Are 60-Minute Movies the Next Big Trend?

Netflix India explores shorter movie formats

Netflix India appears to be exploring a simple idea that not every movie needs to run for two or three hours. The streamer is reportedly developing feature films with runtimes between 60 and 85 minutes. The format could suit viewers looking for shorter movie experiences.

According to reports, this is not being introduced as a separate production label or formal financing category. Instead, it is reportedly part of Netflix India’s wider effort to experiment with formats, filmmakers and stories that may not require conventional feature-length runtimes.

The shorter format could particularly work for thrillers, intimate family dramas and high-concept comedies. Netflix India has reportedly already tested this approach with Greater Kalesh, a 52-minute comedy drama starring Ahsaas Channa. The film reportedly recorded 1.7 million hours viewed during its opening week.

Greater Kalesh also reportedly entered Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English titles following its October 2025 release. If the reported response encouraged further experimentation, the strategy could give filmmakers more flexibility when a story does not need a longer runtime.

This approach is reportedly not limited to lesser-known projects. Multiple films are said to be in development, including one directed by NH10 filmmaker Navdeep Singh. Another is reportedly being produced by Aanand L. Rai under Yellow Color Productions and directed by Pushkar Mahabal, known for Black, White & Gray: Love Kills.

Netflix already has a global “90-Minute Films” category featuring titles such as Bad Trip and Vampires vs. the Bronx. However, the reported approach in India is different because these projects are being conceived and commissioned around shorter runtimes from the beginning.

The reported strategy could mark an interesting shift for Indian OTT content. Streaming platforms have often been associated with long-running series and lengthy films. A greater focus on shorter feature films could give audiences complete stories without requiring a long viewing commitment.
