When it comes to the world of OTT, Netflix is a household name. Known for bagging multiple acclaimed titles, Netflix is also famous for creating its own series and movies, many of which have proved to be global success while some, not so many.
The latest sci-fi title in Netflix’s list is Adam Sandler’s ‘Spaceman’. The movie is based on Jaroslav Kalfar’s novel and international bestseller, Spaceman of Bohemia. The plot of the movie follows Sandler in the role of Jakub, a Czech astronaut six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system encountering a mysterious creature that helps him put his earthly problems back together.
The movie was expected to be Netflix’s next big hit owing to the promising plot and the stellar cast, however the reality seems to be not so good as the movie has opened to painfully average ratings and the above can be seen on one of the most well known criticque platforms, Rotten Tomatoes.
The platform gave the movie a rating of 69 percent on the tomatometer, a rating far below what was expected of the film. Critiques on the platform called the movie cliched, sluggish and even dreary. It seems the main issue with the movie is its heavy reliance of emotional impact but the failure to execute so due to the lack of development and anything fresh in the narrative.
IndieWire’s top critique Ryan Lattanzio was of the opinion that beyond the physical demands of the role, the movie brings no new shade to some of the glummer Sandler personas audiences are already familiar with. He further added that Renck’s film has left him quite literally lost in space with nowhere to go and hence made a harsh pun at the movie for leaving him unimpressed.
