Shameful Achievement Of Bollywood On Google

Google recently unveiled a video titled “25 years in search: the most searched,” providing comprehensive data about what is being searched on the biggest search engine. Many interesting findings emerged, such as soccer being the most searched sport, Cristiano Ronaldo the most searched athlete, and the 1980s being the most searched decade. However, there was a significant error in their presentation.

In the video, they stated that Bollywood is the most searched genre in movies, which is inaccurate. Firstly, Bollywood is not a genre but an industry that has been a part of the entertainment scene in Mumbai since 1913. This mistake may reflect a lack of thorough research on Google’s part, but it also highlights a persistent misconception about the Indian cinema industry in the eyes of people in the West.

Frequently, Bollywood is mistakenly used to represent the entire Indian film industry, which is a diverse universe encompassing Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, and many more. Bollywood is just one component of the broader Indian film landscape. Labelling Bollywood as a genre oversimplifies the rich tapestry of Indian cinema and can perpetuate stereotypes associated with Hindi films, particularly the masala entertainer movies.

However, it’s essential to recognize that in recent years, the Indian film industry has transcended Bollywood’s boundaries. Blockbusters like RRR and Bahubali have demonstrated to the world that Indian cinema extends far beyond the stereotypical Bollywood narrative. It’s crucial for global platforms like Google to accurately represent the diversity and richness of Indian cinema, acknowledging the various languages, cultures, and genres that contribute to its vibrancy.
