President Donald Trump has publicly signalled disapproval of Netflix’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The deal, discussed widely in late 2025 and early 2026, now faces added political scrutiny. Trump’s comments introduce a fresh political angle to an already contentious takeover.
Trump reposted an article on Truth Social criticising the Netflix Warner Bros. deal as a “cultural takeover.” The article argues that the merger could concentrate excessive influence within one media company and questions Netflix’s role in shaping global narratives.
By sharing the criticism, Trump aligned himself with voices opposing the deal’s long term impact on media diversity. The post reflects concerns that alternative viewpoints may be marginalised if the acquisition goes through.
At public events including the Kennedy Center Honors, Trump also raised concerns about Netflix’s expanding market share. He stated that Netflix would grow “a lot” if it acquires Warner Bros. and HBO Max and said he would be personally involved in the decision.
Trump praised Netflix co CEO Ted Sarandos, calling him a “fantastic man.” However, he reiterated antitrust concerns and stressed that regulators must carefully examine the deal before granting approval.
The comments come amid broader debate in Washington and Hollywood. Opposition has emerged across political lines, including from Senator Elizabeth Warren, who described the consolidation as an “anti trust nightmare” with risks to jobs and consumer choice.
Regulatory pressure is further intensified by Paramount Skydance’s hostile bid for Warner Bros. Discovery. Industry concerns and competing interests have added complexity to the approval process.
With Trump signalling potential involvement, the proposed acquisition faces significant legal and political hurdles. The future of the deal remains uncertain as scrutiny continues to build.
