What to Watch on OTT

Disaster in Theatres, Straight to OTT in 14 Days

Karthi’s long pending film Vaa Vaathiyaar, directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, released in theatres on January 14th. The film received a disastrous response from audiences and critics alike. Negative word of mouth impacted its box office run from the opening day.

Made on a budget of nearly Rs 40 crores, the film struggled to sustain screens across many centres. Poor reviews led to sharp drops in occupancy. As a result, the theatrical run ended in heavy losses for the production house.

Following this outcome, Vaa Vaathiyaar is set to stream on Prime Video from tomorrow. The film arrives on OTT just 14 days after its theatrical release. It will be available in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi.

Originally, the film was planned for a Telugu release under the title Annagaru Vostaru. A Telugu trailer was also released weeks earlier. However, last minute release issues and court case struggles restricted the theatrical release to Tamil only.

Many expected the Telugu version to release in theatres shortly after the Tamil version. That plan has now changed. Due to the disastrous theatrical performance, the makers opted for a direct Telugu OTT release.

The early OTT release has surprised many netizens. Streaming a film just 14 days after its theatrical debut is unusual. Trade experts believe the poor box office performance played a key role in this decision.

Industry sources note that the OTT deal was signed long ago. Financial troubles delayed the planned release timeline. After the box office failure, Amazon Prime likely reduced the theatrical window to two weeks.

The key question now is whether Vaa Vaathiyaar will perform better on OTT. The film has already been labelled one of the weakest films in Karthi’s career. A positive OTT response could still offer some relief.

Some Kollywood trackers point out that not all reactions were negative. A section of viewers appreciated the film’s quirky moments. Karthi’s performance in certain scenes also received praise.

It now remains to be seen how Vaa Vaathiyaar is received on OTT. Audience response on the streaming platform will decide its final fate. The film begins its OTT journey tomorrow.
