Biggest Disaster: OTT Audience Also Reject After Theaters

Karthi’s long pending project Vaa Vaathiyaar, directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, released in theatres on January 14 as a Pongal special. The film received disastrous responses from audiences and critics. Negative word of mouth quickly hurt its theatrical run.

Due to overwhelmingly poor reviews, Vaa Vaathiyaar collapsed at the box office. After its disappointing theatre performance, the film started streaming on Amazon Prime Video today. Viewers who skipped theatres are now watching it on OTT and sharing reactions online.

Some trade trackers expected the film to find an audience on OTT because of its unique concept and quirky moments. A section of viewers had appreciated these elements during the theatrical release. However, the OTT response has also turned out to be largely disappointing.

Many viewers feel that despite an interesting idea, the execution fails badly. Several have pointed out weak screenplay stretches and uneven narration. Some viewers also criticised Santhosh Narayanan’s background score, with a few calling the overall film a letdown.

Following the poor theatrical outcome, the Telugu version titled Annagaru Vastharu skipped theatres and released directly on OTT. Telugu audiences have also posted strongly negative reactions after watching the film.

With early responses remaining largely unfavourable, the OTT run of Vaa Vaathiyaar looks uncertain. The focus now shifts to how Karthi plans his next move after this notable setback.
