Vaazha II: Biopic of a Billion Bros directed by Savin SA was released in theatres on April 2 and received highly positive responses from both audiences and critics. Featuring fresh talent, the film quickly gained attention for its emotional storytelling and youthful appeal.
Even though Vaazha II is not a direct sequel to Vaazha, the film carried the same emotional spirit as the original. Since the first Vaazha became a major success and the sequel was written by Vipin Das, audience expectations were naturally high before release.
As a result, the film opened to decent collections and later witnessed strong growth because of highly positive word of mouth. Reports suggest the film eventually crossed the Rs 200 crore mark worldwide, emerging as one of the biggest Malayalam blockbusters in recent times.
Following its theatrical success, the makers dubbed the film into Telugu and released it on April 24. While a large section of Telugu audiences appreciated the film, some viewers surprisingly described it as an overrated movie despite its strong critical and commercial response.
A few viewers also criticised the makers for not releasing the Telugu version simultaneously with the Malayalam release. According to them, the film could have performed even better at the box office if it had arrived in Telugu on the same day and fully capitalised on the growing buzz.
After completing its successful theatrical run, Vaazha II has now started streaming on JioHotstar from May 8 in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi languages. Viewers who missed the film in theatres are now watching it on OTT and sharing their opinions across social media platforms.
OTT responses to the film have also remained mixed despite the overall appreciation. While many viewers are calling Vaazha II one of the strongest Malayalam films in recent years and praising the performances of the young actors, others feel the film does not fully justify the massive hype surrounding it.
Some viewers commented that the first half felt slow and average, while the final 40 minutes delivered stronger emotional impact and better storytelling. Because of this, a section of audiences believes the film works only partially despite receiving extremely high ratings online.
With these mixed reactions now emerging from OTT audiences, it remains to be seen how Vaazha II performs digitally in the coming weeks. The film’s long-term success on streaming platforms will likely depend on whether positive word of mouth continues to dominate online discussions.
