Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom released in cinemas on July 31 with one of the strongest opening days of his career. The early spark faded quickly and collections dropped sharply after the first day. Directed by Gowtham Tinnanuri the big budget action thriller saw its theatrical run end within the first weekend.
Netflix has reportedly acquired the digital rights and the film is expected to release on the platform on August 28. This would be less than a month after its theatrical debut. Although there is no official confirmation industry sources say such quick OTT releases have become common in Tollywood when box office numbers are low. By closing OTT deals early producers can recover investments even when theatrical revenue disappoints.
Overseas Kingdom saw an initial boost especially in the United States but failed to hold audience interest. Many critics blamed an overlong second half and said the tone did not suit Vijay Deverakonda’s strengths.
Netflix appears to be timing the release with the Vinayaka Chaturthi holiday period in hopes that festive viewership will boost its reach. The film set against the backdrop of gold smuggling and an isolated island community awaiting a savior also stars Satyadev and newcomer Bhagyashri Borse.
Whether Kingdom finds redemption online or fades into the OTT library remains to be seen but the digital release could be more important than its short theatrical run.
