Korean producer Hyunwoo Thomas Kim of Kross Pictures, who set up his Mumbai base nearly a decade ago, has steadily built his name in Bollywood. His production house has delivered films like Te3n (2016), Saakini Daakini (2022), Jaane Jaan (2023), and Blind (2023).
In a chat with Mid-Day’s Mayank Shekhar, Hyunwoo recalled how he first came across Balaji Motion Pictures. He had ignored several emails from “Balaji,” assuming they were spam, until he realised the company wanted the rights to his film The Devotion of Suspect X for a Hindi remake.
Curious about who would direct it, Hyunwoo learned that Sujoy Ghosh was already on board. After watching Kahani (2012), he was impressed enough to fly to Mumbai and meet Sujoy personally. His visit soon led to a long-term association with Indian cinema.
Hyunwoo found working in Mumbai easy because most people spoke English and understood his creative ideas. He soon decided to stay in India, drawn by its vast audience and talented filmmakers, though he felt the writing still needed the polish of Korean scripts.
The rights to The Devotion of Suspect X were granted, but the project was delayed since Drishyam (2013) had a similar plot. The remake finally released in 2023 as Jaane Jaan. Hyunwoo admitted he wanted to sue the makers of Drishyam but chose not to after Ekta Kapoor withdrew from the matter.
Now, Hyunwoo is eyeing a new collaboration with Akshay Kumar. He revealed that he recently texted the actor, who’s currently in London, asking him to watch a particular Korean film. Sujoy Ghosh has already written the draft, and if Akshay agrees, the remake is on.
The details of the project are still under wraps, but excitement is building. If this partnership works out, you can expect another gripping remake that blends Korean storytelling with Bollywood’s emotional punch.
