Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently shared his views on rising film production costs and changing industry practices. In a recent interview, he spoke about how new systems in the film industry may be affecting budgets.
He mentioned Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan as examples of cost conscious stars. According to Anurag Kashyap, these actors often avoid upfront fees and instead take backend earnings such as OTT rights.
He said this approach helps control production costs when these actors are part of a project. In such cases, films do not become excessively expensive during production.
Anurag Kashyap pointed to talent agencies as a major reason behind rising budgets. He said some agencies now represent not only actors but also makeup artists, hair stylists and other crew members.
According to him, this structure increases overall production costs. He added that the trend began around 2017 when OTT platforms started expanding rapidly in the entertainment industry.
He also claimed that OTT platforms often prefer actors with large social media followings. This, he said, contributed to the rise of Instagram influencers entering the entertainment space.
Anurag Kashyap noted that some films struggle to find audiences in theatres today. He suggested that audience viewing habits are changing due to the growing presence of OTT platforms.
The filmmaker said the long term impact of OTT on the film industry remains uncertain. He added that broader discussion within the industry is needed to understand the issue fully.
