Chhaava Success: Superstars No More Relevant?

Chhaava is doing roaring business at the box office and has already collected over ₹400 crores.

Produced by Maddock Films, Chhaava has a high chance of becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

Stree 2, which was released last year, was the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024 and was also produced by the same production house.

In both these hit films, two things are common- they share the same production house, and neither is led by a superstar.

Over the past few years, films starring the biggest actors in the country have struggled at the box office.

Whether it’s Salman Khan’s Eid releases, Akshay Kumar’s back-to-back films, Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter, or even Ram Charan’s Game Changer, none of them have managed to secure a place among the top-grossing films.

On the other hand, films like 12th Fail, Chhaava, and Stree 2, despite not featuring the biggest stars, have won over audiences and carved a special place in their hearts.

This raises an important question- is the era of superstars coming to an end?

Lately, it seems that big stars have been taking their fandom for granted, relying on their suave on-screen personas to draw audiences. However, their films often lack substance, which has failed to impress viewers.

Meanwhile, production houses like Maddock Films have taken a different approach. Instead of spending the majority of their budget on casting top stars, they focus on lesser-known actors and prioritize the quality of their films.

Strong content and writing are what make a film stand out and resonate with audiences. There was a time when stars alone could bring people to theatres, but today, it is the content that plays a far bigger role.

Producers like Maddock Films have cracked this formula. If others recognize this shift, Bollywood could have a chance to deliver much better films in the future.
