Comedy Classic Reboot: Ajay-Akshay or Abhishek-Bobby?

Producer Deepak Mukut has restarted plans to revive the classic Bollywood comedy “Do Aur Do Paanch” (1980).

The original film, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor, is remembered for its buddy comedy style and chaotic humour.

Deepak Mukut, who owns the rights to the film, has confirmed that the project is currently in the scripting stage and could take the form of a remake, sequel, or an inspiration-based adaptation rather than a direct copy.

Deepak Mukut had earlier attempted to develop the film about a decade ago with director Kunal Kohli and planned to cast Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol in roles similar to those played by Bachchan and Kapoor in the original.

However, that version did not move forward. This time, Deepak Mukut has again expressed interest in casting Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol, stating that the two actors have good on-screen chemistry.

He also clarified that he took steps to protect the intellectual property after rumors surfaced about Rohit Shetty’s “Golmaal 5” being inspired by the 1980 film.

Rohit Shetty had earlier denied these claims, calling them misleading. He said his film Golmaal 5 with Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar wasn’t a remake of Do Aur Do Paanch.

The project is still in early development, with no director or final format confirmed. Meanwhile, both actors remain busy with other projects.

Abhishek Bachchan has recently focused on character-driven roles in films like Ghoomer (2023) and I Want to Talk (2024), along with OTT projects.

Bobby Deol has seen renewed popularity through films like Animal (2023) and web series such as Aashram.

The reboot reflects Bollywood’s continuing trend of revisiting classic films while trying to adapt them for modern audiences.

However, the final execution will determine its success rather than nostalgia alone.
