Why Bollywood Silent on India’s Big Bafta Win?

Boong BAFTA 2026 win

A Manipuri debut feature has created history at the BAFTA Awards 2026. The film Boong became the only Indian entry and the first Indian film to win in its category.

Boong won the Best Children’s and Family Film award at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts ceremony. The achievement marks a rare global recognition for a North Eastern Indian film.

Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, the 2024 coming of age film stood out among strong competition.

The film beat major international titles such as Lilo & Stitch, Zootopia 2, and Arco to claim the award.

Boong follows a young schoolboy dealing with racial tensions and the harsh realities of life near the Manipur border. The story captures his emotional journey as he faces prejudice while trying to reunite his divided family.

Set against social and political strain, the film presents a deeply personal narrative rooted in lived experiences. Its focus on resilience and identity has resonated with global audiences.

The Manipur government also praised the achievement. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh described the film as a tribute to the spirit and resilience of Manipur.

Despite widespread praise online, Bollywood has largely remained silent. This has raised questions, especially as the industry often uses North Eastern regions as scenic backdrops without amplifying their voices.

The lack of acknowledgment highlights a deeper issue within mainstream cinema. Big budget commercial films continue to dominate attention, while meaningful regional stories struggle for equal recognition.

Boong’s BAFTA win stands as a reminder that Indian cinema extends far beyond familiar centres. It also calls for a broader and more inclusive celebration of stories from across the country.
