Big Holiday Box Office Potential Wasted: Shocking Reason

The festival season usually brings cheer to theatres, but Holi will remain dull this year. No major film is scheduled for release. Many reports suggest that the ongoing T20 World Cup has affected box office planning.

All eyes are now on the Eid releases, Dhurandhar 2 and Toxic. According to Bollywood Hungama, producers are hesitant to take risks during this uncertain period. They are reportedly cautious about recovery amid the heavy buzz around Eid releases.

Due to the absence of big films, several theatres have reduced shows. Some screens are even planning temporary closure. Mumbai’s iconic G7 Multiplex has also felt the impact of the slowdown.

Exhibitor Akshaye Rathi said recent releases failed to deliver expected footfalls. He added that theatres are now depending heavily on the Eid films. Meanwhile, Roopbani Cinema owner Vishek Chauhan pointed out that the examination period has further affected collections.

SSR Cinemas CEO Satadeep Saha expressed concern over relying entirely on Eid releases. He said Assi and Do Deewane Seher Mein could have avoided a clash by choosing Holi. This, he felt, might have eased the pressure on exhibitors.

Some exhibitors also questioned the decision of Dhurandhar 2 and Toxic to release on the same day. Vishek Chauhan noted that both films could have earned higher profits without a clash. He criticised the lack of willingness to share shows, warning that one film may suffer if word of mouth turns weak.

Another exhibitor said the release calendar should have been planned better. However, he mentioned that the second half of the year will see multiple releases every week. The industry hopes that a packed schedule will revive theatre business.

The Kerala Story 2 is arriving this week, but advance booking numbers are modest. Audience excitement appears lower than expected after the trailer launch. Trade experts believe the sequel may still benefit if word of mouth turns positive during Holi.
