Bhool Bhulaiyaa released in 2007 and became a classic horror-comedy for the years to come. Many millennials and Gen-Z associate their childhood memories to this film.
In the recent years, Anees Bazmee took the lead for its franchise and all the cinematic perfections of Priyadarshini were spoiled. Fans complained about the overacting, jumpscares and irrelevant storyline of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2.
People missed the iconic role of Dr. Aditya Shrivastava played by Akshay Kumar. On top of it a really cringe Rooh Baba played by Kartik Aryan did not come close.
Yet the second film in the franchise turned out to be a success. But with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 releasing this Diwali, it seems like the fans already have a lot of complaints with some stereotypical representations.
Anees Bazmee portrays women either as mere eye-candies like Kiara Advani who only appeared to dance along with Kartik Aryan. Or it puts problematic stereotypes into the plot just to make it funny.
Bengali women are shown doing Black Magic just for that horror element. Many netizens trolled the film for making such ridiculous stereotypes more prevalent and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’s trailer shows that it only furthers them.
The internet is already filled with dark humour around Bengali women practising Black Magic and their sexist undertones can’t be ignored. If the film aims to cater to mature audiences, makers can try to generate a more nuanced humour rather than picking up problematic notions.
