Music Rights for 9 Crores? Golmaal 5 Deal Under Fire

T-Series has acquired the music rights of Golmaal 5 from filmmaker Rohit Shetty for around Rs. 9 crore, as per industry sources. The deal signals a renewed phase of collaboration between the two sides after a brief period of professional friction last year.

Their association had faced strain during the Diwali 2024 box office clash between Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham Again. The title track of Singham Again received a copyright strike from T-Series. The issue was linked to similarities with the original Singham theme, whose rights are owned by the label.

The track was later taken down and reworked. Rohit Shetty clarified that the disagreement was contractual in nature and not personal. Despite the controversy, both parties appear to have moved forward with a practical business approach.

The Rs. 9 crore deal for Golmaal 5 is now being seen as a strategic decision. Trade circles believe the agreement reflects mutual commercial interests. It also underlines the importance of long term partnerships in the film industry.

Interestingly, the Golmaal franchise has not been widely known for chartbuster albums. Except for the popular G Go Go Golmaal theme, the series has not delivered major standalone music hits. The franchise has largely thrived on comedy and ensemble performances.

This leads to a key trade question. If Golmaal films are not driven by hit songs, what encouraged Bhushan Kumar led T-Series to make such a significant investment. The answer may lie beyond just music popularity.

Industry observers suggest the valuation is based on franchise strength and digital streaming potential. Brand recall and catalogue value also play a major role. In today’s market, music rights are closely tied to long term intellectual property growth.

The Golmaal series remains one of Hindi cinema’s most bankable comedy brands. Even if music is not central, it supports promotions and marketing reach. For T-Series, backing a proven franchise may outweigh the risk of uncertain musical success.
