Actor-comedian Vir Das’s latest satirical comedy Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos may follow a release strategy similar to Aamir Khan’s recent YouTube experiment. Industry buzz suggests the film could shift to a pay-per-view YouTube model after its theatrical run.
Aamir Khan had earlier expressed his opposition to the traditional OTT streaming model. Acting on this belief, he released Sitaare Zameen Par directly on YouTube using a paid viewing format, bypassing major OTT platforms.
Now, reports indicate that Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, which recently released in theatres, may adopt the same strategy. After completing a six-week theatrical window, the film is speculated to arrive on YouTube as a paid release.
However, the move comes at a challenging time for the film. Happy Patel is reportedly struggling at the box office and is being termed a major disaster in terms of collections so far.
With audiences skipping the theatrical experience, trade circles doubt whether viewers would be willing to pay separately to watch the film on YouTube. The lack of strong word-of-mouth further weakens the pay-per-view prospects.
A similar issue was observed with Sitaare Zameen Par. Once it premiered on YouTube, high-quality versions reportedly surfaced quickly on third-party platforms, impacting paid viewership.
Given the poor theatrical performance of Happy Patel, many believe selling the film to an OTT platform might be a safer option for the makers. An OTT release could help the film reach a wider audience with assured revenue.
For now, it remains to be seen how Aamir Khan’s pay-per-view streaming model evolves. Whether Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos can benefit from this approach or face the same challenges is something only time will tell.
