Actor and Himachal Pradesh MP Kangana Ranaut has faced a legal blow after the Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed her petition to quash a defamation case filed against her.

The case stems from a controversial tweet Kangana posted during the 2021 farmers protest. In the post, she alleged that an elderly woman protestor was paid ₹100 to join the agitation. The woman was later identified as 87-year-old Mahinder Kaur from Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Bathinda, Punjab.

Feeling insulted by the remarks, Mahinder Kaur filed a defamation case, stating that Kangana’s comments were false, damaging to her reputation, and an attack on her dignity.

Kangana argued in court that her tweet did not specifically target Mahinder Kaur with malice and requested the case be dismissed. However, the High Court rejected her plea, allowing the defamation proceedings to continue in the lower court.

The ruling highlights the responsibility of public figures on social media, where a single statement can carry wide consequences. It also reinforces the principle that ordinary citizens have the right to protect their honour and reputation against defamatory remarks.

The case will now proceed through the trial process. Kangana has not issued a fresh statement following the High Court’s decision.
