Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is set to return in a new format as a long form OTT series. The update was confirmed by Karan Johar, who revealed that the adaptation is already in development and moving forward.
Originally released in 2006, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna sparked debate for its bold take on infidelity and emotional dissatisfaction in marriages. While it faced criticism during its release, the film has later been viewed as a story ahead of its time.
Karan Johar recently shared that the story will be expanded into a web series format. He recalled the mixed reactions from audiences, noting that many viewers felt uncomfortable with its realistic portrayal of relationships and complex emotions.
He explained that the narrative addressed truths that many preferred to avoid. This made the film both controversial and impactful at the same time. The shift to a series format could allow a deeper exploration of these themes.
The original film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta. It performed strongly in overseas markets and reportedly grossed over ₹110 crore worldwide, gaining a cult following over the years.
Discussions are currently underway with a leading streaming platform for the series. The long form format may help present the story with greater depth. Changing audience sensibilities could also support its reception today.
