SRK Didn’t Commit, Kajol Said No: KJo’s Dream Collapsed?

Karan Johar has not directed a film since Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023, and fans are waiting for his return. Recent reports suggest that he has been quietly working on a new script despite earlier denying such developments.

Industry buzz indicates that Karan Johar has spent the last six months developing a project. While many assumed it was Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2, reports clarify that it was not a sequel but a modern adaptation inspired by the original film.

The story is said to be a reworked version of Takht, set in a contemporary backdrop. It focuses on a family corporate succession drama, blending emotional conflicts with two parallel love stories at its core.

Multiple writers were involved in shaping the script, with at least four drafts completed. These versions were circulated internally within Dharma for feedback, showing that the project had reached an advanced stage of development.

The strategy reportedly aimed at reviving Dharma with a strong commercial film. Karan Johar is believed to have combined nostalgia from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham with elements from his shelved project Takht.

Two writing teams were assigned to adapt the story for a modern audience. The final script was created by merging ideas from both drafts, resulting in a layered narrative designed to appeal to current viewers.

The project was narrated to several actors and casting teams. However, the casting process faced major hurdles, which eventually slowed down progress and forced the makers to reconsider their approach.

Reports claim that Shah Rukh Khan did not commit to the film, while Kajol declined the offer. Aditya Chopra reportedly did not approve the Aneet and Ahaan pairing, and both Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor were unavailable.

Karan Johar is said to have avoided using the Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham title without a strong star cast. This led to a rethink, with the project being reshaped into a smaller, more grounded narrative.

The film has now shifted to a tier-1 city setting with a middle-class backdrop. Despite the changes, the core theme of family and property succession remains intact, retaining elements from the original concept.

The current working title is Manzil, although it may change later. Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah are expected to play the older couple, while Varun Dhawan is likely to join the cast.

Alia Bhatt, who was earlier associated with the project, is now uncertain. The film is also rumoured to feature Lakshya and Aneet Padda as a younger romantic pair in the evolving storyline.

After multiple revisions, the project has reached its third version. Fans are now waiting to see if this iteration will finally move forward and mark Karan Johar’s return to direction.
