Filmmaker Karan Johar has put an end to speculation about a sequel to his 2001 blockbuster Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham, also known as K3G. He confirmed that the film will remain untouched for the foreseeable future.
In an interview with Hindustan Times on March 21, 2026, for The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra, Karan Johar made his stance clear. He said he would never make K3G 2, as it risks damaging the film’s legacy.
Karan Johar admitted that the original film may have had minor flaws. However, he emphasised that its emotional value and generational connection cannot be recreated. He described K3G as a feeling rather than a franchise.
He added that nostalgia should not be altered or revisited unnecessarily. According to him, attempting a sequel would only invite comparisons and disappointment. The filmmaker believes preserving the original impact is more important than extending its story.
The statement comes at a time when Bollywood is focused on sequels and remakes. Many projects are driven by commercial success. However, Karan Johar believes K3G 2, featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, and Kareena Kapoor Khan, is too iconic to revisit.
Released in 2001, K3G earned over Rs 106 crore at the box office. The film resonated strongly with audiences, especially among the Indian diaspora. Its themes of family, love, and reunion left a lasting cultural impact.
In an industry that often revisits successful titles, Karan Johar’s decision stands out. His choice to protect K3G’s legacy has been appreciated by fans. Many believe it preserves the film’s emotional value and timeless appeal.
