Diljit Dosanjh is caught in the crossfire after sharing screen space with Pakistani actor Hania Aamir in the upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3. The backlash escalated when the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) issued a statement condemning Diljit and the film’s producers.
The makers also apologized and made a public statement about going for an overseas-only release, which means Indian theatres won’t even screen the controversial film.
Stepping into the controversy, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has publicly backed his Chamkila lead! Yes, in a recent interview, Imtiaz stated, “I can’t say much on the row, but since I know Diljit, I can say that us mein deshbhakti ka jazbaa poora bhara hua hai (he is completely filled with the spirit of patriotism). He is a son of the soil. You can see at all his concerts, he shows up with the Indian flag.”
He also addressed the Hania Aamir controversy, said, “Those who can see the truth in him will understand his intentions.”
Earlier, Diljit also responded to the controversy and explained that when the film was shot in February, “everything was fine.” He clarified that the decision to not release the film in India was taken by producers in light of recent developments.
The debate continues to divide opinion, with the latest blow to Diljit being thrown out of Border 2, as reports suggest. However, none of the parties have confirmed this report yet. But if there is a slight chance that the news is true, it is sure to disappoint many.
