Ramayana: Another Target of Politics Like Adipurush

Religious films come with their own set of political backlashes. Whether it’s support or criticism, backlash is inevitable.

Especially for a film like Ramayana, a story that has been passed down through generations, such differences in opinion are expected.

Both believers and non-believers are skeptical about how Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana will pan out, albeit for very different reasons.

Citing how films based on Ramayana had nearly stopped after the 1900s, people argue that recent attempts have been extremely disappointing.

Adipurush is a prime example, where the story was portrayed in one of its worst forms ever.

Many feel that Ramayana has become a point of ridicule in recent times, often used as a punchline in skits or comedy sketches during films.

When compared to the number of films made on the Bible, these critics point out how few films actually exist on the Ramayana.

They also mention how, during the ’90s, songs like Dum Maro Dum linked Lord Ram’s name with a song about drug use, and Hare Ram Hare Ram from Bhool Bhulaiyaa diluted the sanctity of the name by turning it into a mainstream party anthem.

They believe this is how chanting the Lord’s name was transformed from a devotional act to a dance bar soundtrack.

After all of this, their expectations from the upcoming Ramayana are understandably low. Still, they hope that this film turns the tide and finally does justice to the epic.

It is also anticipated that, to promote the film, the makers might invite politicians like Modi ji, Yogi Adityanath, Devendra Fadnavis, and other BJP leaders, perhaps even organizing special screenings for them.

Ironically, the same people who are trolling the makers might end up promoting it, should it align with their beliefs or benefit their image.

A film should be judged by its craft, creativity, and storytelling. A viewer’s opinion shouldn’t flip just because of who is endorsing or opposing the film, that’s neglectful and dishonest as an audience.
