Mardaani 3, starring Rani Mukerji, is set to release on January 30. As part of the film’s promotions, Rani has been giving interviews and making public appearances.
In one such interview, Rani made a remark that quickly sparked controversy. Her attempt to brush it off as a joke only made matters worse and angered many viewers.
During the conversation, the host asked Rani if she had ever slapped any boys. She replied that she had intentionally slapped one boy during her school days. She added that she otherwise had many male friends with whom she would hit playfully as part of friendly banter.
Rani Mukerji then spoke about parenting and relationships. She said fathers should not raise their voices at mothers and stressed that men should not scream or shout at women.
However, she followed this by saying that it was time mothers started shouting at fathers instead. She implied that the narrative should now shift in that direction, which drew laughter and agreement from the interviewers.
This statement itself triggered debate online. But what followed next escalated the backlash further.
While continuing the discussion, Rani joked that although she had hit only one boy, people should not ask her husband what happens to him every day. Her comment suggested that he gets beaten regularly.
The remark did not land well with viewers. Many felt the joke was awkward and inappropriate, and no one found it humorous.
Fans criticised her for bringing her personal life into the discussion. Several said trying to pass it off as humour only made the moment more uncomfortable.
Others pointed out that endorsing a woman shouting at or hitting her husband is just as problematic. Some also criticised the interviewer for agreeing with her comments without questioning them.
Rani Mukerji’s remarks have now sparked a wider debate online. Instead of clarity, the conversation has led to fans arguing among themselves.
