Discounts Fail to Rescue September Flops
The month of September in the ongoing year turned out to be unlucky for a few films that created a lot of hype before release and failed to make a big impact at the box office. Notably, the makers tried to save them with discounts and offers, but none of them helped.
The first in the list is Kunal Kemmu’s Vibe, which marked his second film as a director. The movie’s teaser and trailer hinted at an experience similar to Madgaon Express, and the concept looked different. However, the content did not leave an impression, leading to closing net collections of Rs. 13.50 crores.
Priyadarshan’s Haiwaan was one of the biggest disasters. Marking the reunion of the director with Akshay Kumar after Bhooth Bangla, the theme was supposed to attract audiences. But the film hardly created any buzz before release and had a low opening at the box office. The movie ended its run with only Rs. 9.50 crores.
Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra clashed with Vibe on the same day. Despite the clash, none of the films worked. Daayra’s closing collections were reported to be Rs. 5.75 crores. Notably, trade experts stated that the reason behind its failure was the wrong promotional strategy and no star value.
All three films created headlines because the makers tried to attract audiences with offers on booking platforms. This included a 50% discount on tickets and the Buy One Get One Free offer. But they were of no use since audiences completely rejected the movies.
Netizens reacted on social media by saying that the biggest mistake made by the makers of the three films is that they expected audiences to enter theatres without doing any promotions. A few even pointed out that in a lot of places, people were unaware of the fact that the three movies had been released because the promotional materials hardly created any hype.
Social media users even advised the makers to avoid giving discounts if a film flops within the first three days. They said that the producers need to understand that, in such cases, they have to do some more hard work and effort to grab the attention of the moviegoers.
The failure of Vibe, Haiwaan, and Daayra is clearly a lesson for those producers whose movies are being made and are expected to arrive soon in theatres. The makers of those upcoming films cannot make the same mistakes. But only time will tell how many of them have understood the situation.
