Blockbuster Potential Sequel: Legendary Star as Villain

Shabana Azmi’s casting as the antagonist in Awarapan 2 may not appear flashy, but it adds quiet strength to the sequel. The film already carries the weight of legacy, and her presence brings added credibility and dramatic depth.

With more than five decades in cinema, Shabana Azmi no longer chooses roles for visibility or box office validation. Her selections now focus on meaningful impact. She has openly acknowledged this shift while speaking about the film.

Directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Films, Awarapan 2 marks Shabana Azmi’s first collaboration with the banner. However, her creative association with Mahesh Bhatt dates back to Arth released in 1982.

The sequel revives Emraan Hashmi’s Shivam Malik, a character believed to be dead in the original film. Shabana Azmi’s character stands directly opposite him. This dynamic sets the stage for strong emotional and narrative conflict.

According to the actor, her role appears at a pivotal turning point in the story. This indicates a functional and story driven antagonist rather than a decorative presence. The character is designed to influence the narrative significantly.

Shabana Azmi has shown comfort with morally ambiguous roles in recent projects. Films and series like Dabba Cartel and The Empire reflect this phase. She neither glorifies nor avoids negative characters.

Her approach remains simple and honest. If a role sparks interest, she accepts it. This perspective feels grounded in an industry that often prioritises visibility and hero focused narratives.

She also shared an anecdote about watching Emraan Hashmi grow up. Her earlier association with his grandmother adds emotional continuity. This mirrors the generational nature of Hindi cinema.

While Awarapan 2 is still shaping its identity, Shabana Azmi’s involvement hints at emotional substance. The film appears to aim for depth rather than surface level spectacle.
