Sitaare Zameen Par Overseas BO: Shocking Numbers

The much-anticipated release of Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par is off to a surprisingly slow start overseas. Once a dominant force in international markets, Aamir’s latest outing is witnessing dismal advance bookings, with early estimates pointing towards a weekend gross of just $1.8–2 million.

For context, that’s the kind of figure he regularly pulled off effortlessly back in the 2000s.

It seems like Aamir Khan’s hopes have gone down. Why? Because his latest film Sitaare Zameen Par has begun with a surprisingly slow start.

The overseas collection of the film has not been good, and people are already talking about whether releasing Sitaare Zameen Par in the theatres was a bad idea.

The film, co-starring Genelia D’souza, is witnessing dismal advance bookings, with early estimates pointing towards a weekend gross of just $1.8–2 million. For context, that’s the kind of figure he regularly pulled off effortlessly back in the 2000s.

If reports are to be believed, the film has not even sold 1000 tickets in traditional international markets like US-Canada and Australia for the opening day, 3 days out.

To put things in perspective, Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 earned over $8 million during its opening weekend overseas.

Of course, Dhoom 3 and Sitaare Zameen Par are very different kinds of films.

Still, bringing in just a quarter of Dhoom 3’s opening numbers is far from what Aamir Khan and his team would have hoped for.

Unless the film garners exceptionally strong word of mouth (WOM), a turnaround seems unlikely. Unlike Aamir’s previous hits like Dangal or Secret Superstar, Sitaare Zameen Par doesn’t yet appear to have the weight to pull audiences to cinemas overseas.

The prequel, Taare Zameen Par, was amazing and won the audience’s hearts due to its emotional storyline with a strong message. However, it seems like Sitaare Zameen Par could not touch upon the elements properly and hence, the overseas failure.
